What's in the web for family physicians - respiratory medicine

1. TTMed (Timely Topics in Medicine) Respiratory

A dedicated website on respiratory medicine with the aim of delivering updated information for practitioners and patients. Review articles, expert interviews and congress reports are available at the website. CME webcast lectures and clinical scenarios for physicians are present. There are also links to recommended medical books as well as other Internet resources on respiratory medicine.

2. The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)

The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) was set up with the goal of reducing asthma prevalence, morbidity, and mortality. It works with international experts to produce guidelines, reports, and other resources on asthma management. The various guidelines and reports are available at the website for retrieval by physicians and healthcare practitioners, notably a 30-page Pocket Guide for Asthma Management and Prevention for free download by physicians. Other publications like Workshop Report, Global Strategy for asthma management are also included at the website.

3. Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD)

As a collaborative project of the US National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the World Health Organization (WHO), GOLD was established to increase awareness of COPD and to reduce morbidity and mortality from this disease. GOLD aims to improve prevention and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) through a renewed research interest in this extremely prevalent condition. At the website are GOLD documents for free download, including a quick-reference guide for physicians, Pocket Guide to COPD Diagnosis, Management, and Prevention; Executive Summary and Workshop Report on Global Strategies on COPD treatment. Guidelines for patient information as well as teaching slide sets are also available.

4. Asthma Management Handbook

Developed by the National Asthma Council of Australia, the website of Asthma Management Handbook presents up-dated information on the management of asthma, covering areas of philosophy, techniques and knowledge. The handbook is intended as a practical guide for practitioners in the management of patients with asthma. Besides the handbook, the website also features updated medical news, webcasts, emergency asthma management, as well as links to other asthma related documents and websites.

5. The Surgeon General"s Web page

Maintained by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the website on Tobacco Cessation Guidelines delivers a lot of online resources on smoking cessation. Amongst the content are abundant links and resources on new findings about the latest drugs and counselling techniques for treating tobacco use dependence. Smokers can learn where to get help to quit smoking and how to improve the chances of successfully quitting smoking. A lot of information and tips for physicians on smoking cessation are also available.

6. Division of Tuberculosis Elimination (DTBE), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

As the designated body in CDC for the prevention, control, and elimination of tuberculosis, the website of DTBE features abundant information on news and updates in the management of tuberculosis. Guidelines, surveillance reports, education and training materials, newsletters, other resources, and TB related links are available. 7. Diseases of the Respiratory System Notes

Dedicated to research in respiratory medicine, the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research of Australia has put up teaching notes on diseases of the respiratory system online on the Internet. Emphasis of the notes was made on mechanisms of disease processes and on prevention. The important aspects of physiology, pathology, bacteriology and clinical presentation of patients are highlighted. At the website are also research areas of the institute as well as related Internet links in the fields of respiratory and sleep medicine.
