What’s on the web for family physicians –urology

This website offers up-to-date and commonly referenced guidelines on urology practices. The urological conditions are classified into oncological and non-oncological components. They are then further divided into conditions based on the area of urological organs affected or the disease nature in a systematic manner. The aim of the EAU guidelines is to assist practicing clinicians in making informed decisions in their daily practice, taking evidenced based recommendations, their patient’s personal circumstances, values and preferences into account. Their medical journal, the European Urology, has an impact factor of 13.938 in 2015 (the highest rank in urology practice). Their annual meeting, the Annual EAU Congress, is held in different European countries, covering most urological topics with discussion on advances in management.

American Urological Association (AUA)

The AUA website offers up-to-date guidelines on urology practices based on the clinical practices in North America. They provide the Best Practice Statements on commonly encountered conditions and are intended for general practitioners. Their medical journal is the Journal of Urology, with an impact factor of 4.471. AUA has also launched mobile apps targeted for primary care physicians – Guidelines-At-A-Glance for Primary Care Physicians App, which summarises gthe guidelines and best practice statements of AUA, reviewed at regular intervals. This ready reference tool aims to provide up-to-date, evidence-based statements, and expert clinical opinion to help practicing primary care clinicians provide optimal patient care in urology.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance

The British based NICE guidelines and evidence-based recommendations has a section in Urology. Guidelines of different urological conditions are available including lower urinary tract symptoms, urinary tract infection, urinary incontinence, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, renal cancer, testicular cancer and some general topics. Each condition includes Technology Appraisals Guidance which assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of health technologies, the Medical Technologies and Diagnostics Guidance help to ensure that the National Health Service (NHS) is able to adopt clinically and cost effective technologies rapidly and consistently and the Interventional Procedures Guidance recommends whether interventional procedures are safe and effective for use in the NHS.

The focus of National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®), a not-for-profit alliance leading cancer centers, is to enhance patient care through research and education. NCCN develops resources that present useful information to the various stakeholders in the health care delivery system. NCCN Member Institutions pioneered the concept of the multidisciplinary team approach to patient care and conduct research that contributes to the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. In Urology, the website has coverage on kidney cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, penile cancer and issues on early prostate cancer detection. After free registration, one can access to the respective content easily.

With an impact factor of 3.533, BJUI aims to provide quality research and clinical information for the urological community, promoting awareness of new advances and supporting best practice in urology. BJUI publishes original articles, reviews, comments and educational articles on adult and paediatric urology.
